500 Days of Summer was Just Right

If you need a good break from a typical romantic comedy, then take a little Summer vacation (500 Days of Summer, that is). The movie is about a young man, Tom Hansen, who falls in love with a woman who is not in love with him, though they are in a relationship with each other. The delusions of love alter the reality of the situation for Mr. Hansen as his love interest does not return his same feelings. Though super determined to get Summer back, he is hard hit with the fact that she is now married and in love with her husband the way she never could have been with Tom.

The movie was amorous and sobering. I admit that I expected this movie to end happily, but was both glad and sad to be disappointed. Like most relationships, this movie is set up to have you believing that in the end, it has to all work out. Even the scenes danced around from early stages to late stages, so that you the viewer feel the ups and downs of coupledom too. You root for Tom to get Summer in the end, but like the real game of love, you never know how it will end, and that's just something you'll have to gamble.

Though this movie sometimes had its lame jokes, over-the-top-not-so-funny scenes, and oddly precocious little girl, it was actually pretty good. I appreciate the point of the story, the tender look at love, and the harsh truth of relationships. I am so glad it wasn't the same BS I expected.

If you can stomach other syrupy sweet cliche romantic comedies, then you can definitely appreciate the warmth of 500 Days of Summer.
