Nine Wishes It Was

When Penelope Cruz took the role for Nine, she quickly hopped right into her dancing repertoire that she had in her younger days. The burlesque dance she performs in this movie is about the only highlight for this remake of a 1963 Italian version entitled: 8 1/2.

Rob Marshall--the director of this film-- is famous for Chicago, which was much more entertaining and dazzling than Nine. Ironically, Marshall captured the same dilemma he chronicles in Nine: making crappy movies.

Lucky for him, people like me got suckered in to watching this movie simply because of the credibility of the cast. Nicole Kidman, Fergie, Marion Colliard, and Daniel Day Lewis; even Kate Hudson has a dancing and singing part.

Javier Bardem (Penelope's man) was rumored to actually play Guido, instead of Lewis, but looks like he decided to let the There Will Be Blood star take the role instead.
I understand that Mr. Marshall has a Broadway background, but this time around he struggled keeping the energy alive in this musical. I'd say stick to musicals, but I don't even think I'd like it live. Sorry. I give Nine a 3.
