Going the Distance, and Making It

I have my nose in the air lately when it comes to romantic comedies but tonight I actually really liked Drew's new rom-com Going the Distance. The duo of Justin Long and Ms. Barrymore, on-off again couple, was a refreshing look at love in an age of technology and long distance. What I like most about this movie is it wasn't so prescribed: instead it gives the audience a lot more credit when it comes to predicting movies. I'd be spoiling it for you if I gave you examples.

The screen writer, Geoff LaTulippe, made his feature film debut with this movie, giving even more inspiration to all writers out there with scripts sitting in their My Documents folders. Ms. Barrymore has also said that this movie was somewhat of a testimonial to her relationship with Mr. Long and their travel-happy relationship. Okay, maybe happy is not the right word, but in our world that means the small moments we get to embrace in our own relationships are few and far between for any two actors.

If that is in fact the case, the movie must have been a solution to the problem and yet a cathartic process at the same time. I'm glad, for my sake, however, that we can ALL sit back and laugh at it. Good luck to them. Great flick.
