Year One

It finally happened: I saw a movie and loved it right on the spot! Year One, Yippee! I'm loving Michael Cera's quiet, righteous-type humor that seems to contrast with Jack Black's zany, say anything character. This movie was funny for many reasons: the costumes, the theme (cavemen), the plot (funny because its ridiculous), and the actors. But above all, what I have to say reigns as the movie's best feature is the witty dialogue. Stereotypes of what cavemen should be were casually applied as day-to-day conversation from the get go. (Jack Black's character trying to impress a girl:) "I know I'm not the best hunter . . . or gatherer." (The girl:) "But those are the only two jobs we have here." Also, there were bible characters incorporated in the plot.

And with everyone against those two guys in the movie, the underlying thought remains true again: the underdogs come up in the end, with a little lesson in the making of course. Black's character undergoes a little self-cleansing as he disappoints nearly everyone in the movie in his quest to try to make himself a leader. But every leader knows that you lead by example, right?

Lately movies I've been watching have not been leading a good example of original, classic cinema. In my opinion, this movie is a great example of a movie that should look like: clever, introspective, and characters you can empathize with. I hope that Year One promises new beginnings.
